TRACS (Teaching, Research, And Collaboration System) is the new Texas State University collaborative learning environment. TRACS is the Texas State version of Sakai, which is an open or community-source course management system first developed by a consortium of universities that includes MIT, Stanford, Indiana University, and the University of Michigan. Texas State is part of the Sakai Educational Partners Program, a group of approximately 90 institutions of higher education, developing and deploying Sakai.
The implementation of TRACS began in the fall, 2005 with a two semester pilot phase. This was followed by two years of voluntary migration of course and project sites from the Blackboard environment into the TRACS environment. During this time, TRACS was continually enhanced based on feedback from faculty and guidance from the TRACS Steering Committee.
At the end of the May, 2008 spring semester, over 93% of faculty who used Blackboard had migrated their courses to TRACS. At that time, a decision was made to retire Blackboard at the end of the 2008 summer sessions.
With the retirement of Blackboard on August 25, 2008, Texas State reached the conclusion of a successful migration from Blackboard to TRACS.
